Product Description

Set in WWII-era Shanghai, this espionage thriller follows the journey of a young woman, Wang Jiazhi, who gets swept up in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with a powerful political figure, Mr. Yee.



Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1, encoded with MPEG-4 and granted a 1080p transfer, Ang Lee抯 Lust, Caution is released on Blu-ray via Edko Video. The presentation is rock-solid. Detail is marvelous, contrast is exceptional, and I could not spot any signs of DNR manipulation whatsoever. The fine film grain noticeable throughout the film has been preserved and film-purists should be delighted to learn that this is indeed a very film-centered presentation. The color scheme on the other hand is near perfect ?it is lush, rich, and every bit as impressive as one would hope it would be. During the panoramic scenes for example where the impressive architecture of the colonial buildings is emphasized by the camera you will notice an exceptional degree of detail mixed with vividness and rich colors transforming this film into quite the spectacle. Those of you who have already viewed Lust, Caution on SDVD will be pleasantly surprised to notice the obvious superiority of the BD transfer in terms of nuance as well (a good example would be the dust scene before the duo succumbs to their carnal desires). Indeed, from start to finish this is a spectacular treatment that will surely impress Ang Lee's fans. For the record, the print is in immaculate condition, sparkling and spotless.


This Blu-ray disc offers three different tracks: Mandarin: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, Mandarin: PCM 7.1, and Mandarin: Dolby Digital 6.1. I experimented with the DTS-HD mix as well as the PCM track and depending on what hardware you have at home I suggest that you opt for the DTS-HD Master mix. It is incredibly potent, very well mixed, and one thing that made an enormous impression on me - expertly balanced. The beautiful soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat comes off the speakers with a notable clarity allowing the viewer to fully embrace the period-feel Lust, Caution boasts. The DTS-HD Master mix makes it particularly easy to appreciate the delicate classical tunes and especially during the second half of the film when the passion between the two lovers begins growing roots the music complements the story beautifully. You really don抰 have to turn up the volume here either, simply adjust it to a comfortable setting, sit back, and immerse yourself into this most intoxicating, full of color and seductive melodies, journey that Lust, Caution is. This is pure perfection folks!!

For the purpose of this review I did experiment with the Dolby Digital 6.1 track as well but suffice to say it isn抰 a match for the DTS-HD Master mix. The dialog is still crystal clear and easy to follow but the soundtrack isn抰 as potent. Optional Korean, Traditional Chinese, and English subtitles are provided. Finally, while I cannot comment on the Korean and Chinese subtitles the English translation is very well done - with proper syntax and lacking any disturbing spelling errors.
